David was born at Victoria River Downs cattle station. For most of his childhood he was raised by the camp elders there. They showed him how to hunt, fish and look for bush tucker. He lived in many Aboriginal communities and was even sent to a cadet’s army school in Queensland before leaving school at the age of 15 and returning home to his grandparent’s country where he was a stockman for 10 years.
It was upon his return to country that he began to take an interest in his aboriginal heritage and started to study art and culture under the direction of his grandfather and tribal elders.
“One day I went to see my grandfather out bush and when I arrived, he and his brother were painting and carving around a fire. That’s when it hit me – I knew what I was missing.”
