Things to do in Katherine

Katherine Region has so much to offer visitors. There are some gems that often get overlooked, so we'd like to share with you some of our favourite places to swim, walk, explore, eat and stay.

Swimming, biking and walks:

We still can't beat the top spots in the region for swimming and bush walking; Nitmiluk Gorge, Edith Falls, Mataranka Thermal Pools, and Bitter Springs. They will not disappoint. Nitmiluk Gorge has also got some great Mountain Biking Tracks!

For the more adventurous, Umbrawarra Gorge but is best to go earlier in the dry season while the water is still flowing.

Katherine Low Level park and river is a beautiful place to picnic and is only a short way from town. There is a bike track that travels along the river from Katherine town to the Low Level, passing by the Katherine Hot Springs.

Best places to eat:

The Hungry Goat Cafe is open at Top Didj Gallery from May-September for delicious toasties, wraps, coffee and cakes (loads of GF and DF options).

Maiden's Lane is hidden in the industrial area of town and is our top pick for either breakfast or lunch.

The Pop Rocket Cafe sits at the top of the Katherine Hot Springs and is both shady and tasty.

Art, Entertainment, Culture:

For Art Exhibitions and other Galleries in Katherine, visit Djilpin Arts and Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts and Culture Centre.

Katherine Regional Arts is a great place to check out and see what local and travelling artists have to offer, including music, theatre, spoken word and community projects.

If you would like to connect more deeply with the local culture of First Nations people Nitmiluk Cultural Tours is a must. Or visit Manuel Pamkal at Dalabon Cultural Tours,

For something a little difference, Katherine Outback Experience offers visitors a glimpse into life on a Top End cattle station. Join Tom Curtain with horse-starting and working dog demonstrations among tales of the bush and his guitar.

You can also wander through Katherine streets on your own to explore Katherine's Street Art or drop into Katherine Museum and learn of the history of our region.

Adventure tours:

If there is only one thing we would highly recommend to do while in Katherine it would be to get out into the natural landscape and explore what the Katherine River has to offer with Gecko Tours.

Places to stay:

Ereluk Escarpment Campground is a unique place to stay at the foot of the escarpment. There are lookouts and bush walks, and you can swim in some gorgeous little water holes right near your camp site.

Gorge View Bush Retreat is another great spot set on the Katherine River.
