Norman was born in Mataranka.  His white father, Charlie Birell, worked on the train line in the Mataranka area.  He was brought up by his aboriginal mother and aboriginal father Dooley Lane.  Norman never had any contact with his white father.  He was taken into the bush by his aboriginal family to keep him and his brother Frankie Lane hidden so they would not be taken to an internment camp.

Norman started painting in 1982 after watching his adoptive aboriginal father painting.  Norman is recognized as one of the best artist from the region. Norman has three children and is up to number nine wife.

Norman loves going hunting and fishing when he gets back to his country.
